Sunny Sunday in Vancouver & Night Market

Sunday.  Breezy.  Sunny.  Blue sky.

Plus family.

The best recipe for a memorable weekend.

image

This is at a park site at the end of Shaughnessy Street in Vancouver, near the Oak Street Bridge.  This river is the Fraser River.image

Here is looking east.  The bridge is the crossing bridge for the Canada Line, connecting Vancouver to Richmond.

Night Market is a big, big part of life in my native country Taiwan, and with more than 50% of the population in Richmond is of Asian, it seems appropriate enough to have this traditional and novel experience here.

TaiwanFest 2012

TaiwanFest 2012

It is a beautiful sunny day for the first day in September, and we decide to swing by the third annual TaiwanFest held in Downtown Vancouver.

image

As we were here last year, we are eager to see what has changed. Clearly, food is still THE main attraction.

image

A lot more food stands, and the street banquet is more sizeable and more organized. No picture for that, as I don’t think it is polite to take photos of people enjoying the food.

Another gorgeous shot at Robson Square.

508 Bistro – Taiwanese Cuisine – 20110909

CIMG0941With the due date quickly approaching, we want to do some more dining out as we can, before our life focuses wholeheartedly on our baby. We decided to hit the newly opened Taiwanese restaurant called 508 Bistro.

We looked at the menu, and it’s all full of familiar Taiwanese dishes. Curiosity and yearn set in, and we ordered about eight items.

Hakka style stir-fried squid with pork & bean curd

Taiwanese Hot and Sour Soup

Marinated Platter with Varieties Selected by Chef

CIMG0947

Spicy Taiwanese Tofu Hotpot

And for post-dinner drink, we ordered the Honey Green Tea:

All were very delicious. Full of Taiwanese feel. I would highly recommend the restaurant to anyone who wants to go and experience the Taiwanese cuisine.

Elite Food & Bar, Taiwan – February 2010

Last year before I tied the knot with my high school soulmate in Taiwan, we were treated for some delicious food at Elite Food & Bar:

It is one of the restaurants in Taiwan that brands the “slow living, slow eating” concept. The point, of course, is not to do everything slowly, but rather take the approach of enjoy and savour what the life has to offer. To honour that idea, we patiently finish our meal in a timely and elegant manner, in a time of two and half hours.  The inside is relaxing and welcoming, and you can actually see through the other side of the building:

The table set up is simple, matching the “slow living” concept:

Well, I will go straight for the dishes, excuse me~

TaiwanFest 2011

Today marks the first day in a 3-day event in TaiwanFest. It takes place on Granville Street in Downtown Vancouver, and also in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

CIMG0919

There are plenty of booths from various vendors, including the Tzu Chi Foundation.

This year, there is a new event called a Street Banquet, a traditional Taiwanese-style celebration where people from the neighbourhood gather and enjoy food, drink, and entertainment.

We decided to hit the food vendors first before the crowd set in.

Our first stop is the traditional Taiwanese cuisine, Pork Intestine Noodle:

They also have fruit candies, glazed:

Food, sunshine, today is a beautiful day indeed.
